I guess you really can’t trust anyone anymore. H&R Block is getting slapped for bilking customers with it’s Express IRA retirement accounts. You can go read the article for the full details but basically, the account charges more in (undisclosed) fees than it earns in interest thus making it a diminishing investment. Man, I’m so glad that I’m sleeping with my financial advisor – it keeps her honest.

TextPayMe Revisited…
March 11, 2006A while back I mentioned having found the guys of TextPayMe in “Text Me The Money…” and signed up. I just wanted to say that I’ve used the service several times and have been really impressed. While it’s still in beta, I’ve not had any issues with the service and was able to shuffle money between my bank account and my TPM account quite easily. They’ve been working on adding features as quickly as they can and have expanded their coverage of carriers significantly in the past month or so. If you haven’t signed up yet, give it a shot. Heck, they even GIVE YOU the first $5 just for signing up – what does it hurt??
Oh and they DO count referrals so please feel free to use my link to sign up.
Thanks!!
They’ve got a blog in case you care to keep up with them in that fashion.
Ruby Explained (on acid)…
March 8, 2006As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve decided to teach myself Ruby. It’s really not a complex language but I hadn’t had my “ah-ha” moment with it yet in spite of having read of the tutorials and going over “The Pickaxe“. I just was really just “Google-gramming” (AKA “copy/paste/debug” programming) to get what I wanted. Well, all that has changed.
I don’t remember how I found “Why’s (Poignant) Guide to Ruby” but I’m sure grateful that I did. This explanation of Ruby breaks it down perfectly and leads you thru the wonderland while pointing out and explaining the sights and details. That being said, PLEASE DO NOT READ THIS WHILE ALTERED!! This includes (but is not limited to) drunk, stoned, baked, bagged, hammered, or hopped up. The author, whytheluckstiff, apparently was plenty altered for all of us when this was written. Seriously though, you will have to get past the cartoons and semi-random side trips to find the meat of this guide but I assure you that it’s worth it. And the explanations are just fine even if you’re a beginning programmer. Ruby has really caught my attention as having taken many of the good qualities of various languages and melded them into a powerful and coherent dialect. I probably would even recommend it as a first language for someone who’s looking to learn how to program.
(Legal) MP3 Music on the Cheap…
March 7, 2006Randy just turned me on to allofmp3.com for my musical needs. They give you a decent selection and all of the albums have the ability to preview with a low quality sample. The most interesting point is that they charge by bandwidth instead of by song. So longer songs (hence albums) cost more. When you get ready to download, you simply choose the format (MP3, WMA, OGG, etc) and the quality. Ultimately, it ends up being a MUCH cheaper solution. They just finished a revamp of the site itself so things are MUCH easier to get around but I still recommend using their (downloadable) winapp for a better experience. At around $1.20 – $2.00 an album, it looks like I’m going to be legitimizing my collection.
*** UPDATE: It would appear that XROST is currently down in order to move their payment provider. Darn it all…
Oh, and I recommend that you use XROST iCards for filling up your account. They integrate with PayPal so you payment details don’t leave PayPal. Plus you get an extra 10% for using the service – nice.
